Editorial Policy

Last updated August 2, 2026

This policy describes how content on this website is created, reviewed, and maintained. It exists so that readers can judge the reliability of what they read here.

Authorship

All substantive medical and medical-legal content on this website is authored and reviewed by Marc H. Shomer, MD, PhD, QME, a board-certified ophthalmologist, Adjunct Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, and an active California Qualified Medical Evaluator. Author and review information appears at the foot of each substantive page. No page carries a review attribution unless it has in fact been reviewed.

Purpose and scope

Content is written for attorneys, insurers, claims professionals, government agencies and other medical-legal professionals. It explains ophthalmic concepts as they arise in litigation and claims. It is educational and general; it is not medical advice, not legal advice, and not an opinion about any particular matter.

Standards applied

  • Accuracy over persuasion. Content states what is generally accepted in ophthalmology. Where a question is genuinely unsettled or fact-dependent, the content says so rather than asserting a conclusion.
  • Association distinguished from causation. Temporal sequence is not treated as proof of causation anywhere on this site.
  • Differential diagnosis acknowledged. Where findings have more than one reasonable explanation, alternatives are identified.
  • Limitations stated. The limits of records, imaging, and isolated tests are described where relevant.
  • No superlatives or unsupported claims. This site does not claim to be the best, top, leading, or number one in any category, and makes no claims about search rankings, case counts, or outcomes that have not been verified.
  • No fabricated support. Citations, credentials, affiliations, publications, and experience statements are drawn from verifiable sources. Where a reference has not yet been verified, the content is marked accordingly rather than invented.
  • No testimonials. This website does not publish client or attorney testimonials.
  • Confidentiality preserved. No case names, party identities, counsel names, confidential details, or outcomes from prior engagements are published.

Sources

Content draws on peer-reviewed ophthalmic literature, professional society guidance, standard ophthalmology references, and Dr. Shomer's clinical, surgical, and medical-legal experience. Where a specific authoritative reference is appropriate but has not yet been verified for publication, the placeholder [AUTHORITATIVE MEDICAL REFERENCE TO BE VERIFIED] appears rather than an unverified citation.

Review cycle

Each substantive page displays its publication date and its last substantive review date. Pages are reviewed periodically and when relevant medical understanding, professional guidance, or the applicable regulatory framework changes materially.

Independence

This website accepts no advertising, no sponsored content, and no paid placements. No third party has editorial influence over its content. Content is not written to favor plaintiff or defense positions.
